Horstman offer KADDB the ultimate suspension solution for the M60 upgrade.

Launched at SOFEX 2004, the King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau and Horstman Defence Systems Ltd of Bath England have released details of the Hydrogas suspension upgrade for the Jordanian M60 MBT’s. The solution is a bolt on hydropneumatic suspension that improves vehicle mobility and weapon platform stability in addition to enabling significant weight increase due to armour and other equipment enhancement.

The M60 suspension upgrade consists of the proven Hydrogas pneumatic spring and hydraulic damper system from the Al Hussein (Challenger) MBT. The hydropneumatic assembly is fixed to a cast steel housing, which fits to the M60’s “boat shaped” hull, and bolts onto the existing suspension mountings.

Horstman is already under contract from JAF for a suspension repair and overhaul facility for the Al Hussein program. Horstman has been working with the JAF Engineering team at the King Hussein Main Workshops (KHMW) to ensure that all the necessary tools, spares, know-how and training is in place to enable JAF to repair and overhaul the Al Hussein Hydrogas suspension.

By selecting Hydrogas for the M60 MBT upgrade, KADDB will ensure that the cross-country ride performance and weapon platform stability is equal to that of the latest generation of main battle tanks. It will also enable KADDB to significantly increase armour protection levels without compromising the cross-country ride and use the full power available from the proposed engine upgrade when traveling at speed over rough ground. Selecting Hydrogas will also mean the suspension can be supported with existing KHMW facilities equipment enabling JAF to be in control of the logistics support as well as generate jobs for the Army’s own workshops.

Not exactly a new product, but all four Warrior FEL's (Frame Electrical Layout) have been back at Bath for updating to the latest build standard of vehicle equipment.

The FEL's enable Army technicians to training in a workshop environment on the electrical equipment fitted to Warrior, gaining valuable experience on fault finding and fixing. Any of a large range of actual vehicle faults can be setup on the training aids so the technicians can quickly learn "hands on".

Proof Pressure Test Rig

The maximum working pressure of our hydropneumatic range of suspension systems is very high relative to conventional hydraulic systems and components. All of our suspension cylinders are proof pressure tested at typically 1.25 times their maximum operating pressure. To undertake this process, a proof pressure test rig is required that ensures that the process is carried out in a safe working environment.

This equipment is one of a range of special tools designed to support or hydropneumatic suspension systems.

Damper Setting Rig

Each of our Hydropneumatic suspension units has a patented disk spring damper valve. The valve has a high flow rate and can be adjusted for actual blow-off differential pressure by increasing or decreasing the pre-load on the disk springs.

To accurately set the damper, we have a dedicated special tool which checks the differential pressure of the damper at blow off. This equipment is one of a range of special tools designed to support or hydropneumatic suspension systems.

AS90 APU Run-up Umbilical

AS90 Self Propelled Gun (SPG) has a an Auxiliary Power Unit located forward of the crew compartment. To enable the crew to run-up the APU in a safe environment where they can check for faults, we have designed a runup umbilical. The picture left shows a 3D view of the rear door of the vehicle with the umbilical attached.

The APU is transferred from the vehicle and into the cage where the exhaust pipe, coolant cables and electrics are attached.

The picture right shows the finish product complete with APU ready for testing.

TERRIER - The latest generation engineer vehicle for the British Army.

The hydropneumatic suspension system proposed for the TERRIER military vehicle has a high performance pneumatic spring and hydraulic damper combined with a suspension lockout that is operated when the vehicle is undertaking its engineering roles. The suspension is similar to that used on the AS90 & K9 Thunder SPG and has some common components.
